In 2001, I moved to San Francisco to become a poet. A few months later, I did an East Coast tour -- just to make sure.
This show, at the dearly beloved Metro Cafe, was my first return to DC, a city where I'd lived for five years. I still hadn't completely scrubbed it from my mind. You can hear it in the poems. The subjects of most of them were still in the room. I'd written "Orthodox Girls" inside Elon's apartment, and right before I moved to SF, I performed it in the kitchen for him and Ari. They were freaked. So was I. I never thought I'd show it to anyone else. And then I moved West and started performing it for a few hundred people.
